Engaging in acts of social justice, or tikkun olam, is an important
part of Reconstructionist Judaism. It is also a core value of the
Chico Havurah.
We are proud co-sponsors, with the Congregational Church of Chico,
of the Shalom Free Clinic, a walk-in clinic that provides totally free
mental and physical health care to anyone seeking services. In
addition to counseling and medical services, the clinic also provides
prescription assitance, a free buffet lunch on Sundays, and assitance
with eligibity forms for social services. Located at 1190 E. First
Avenue, the clinic’s hours are Sunday 1-4. Additional help with
mental health issues is available on Wednesday evenings. The
clinic also now boasts a thrift store located at 250 E. First Street in
downtown Chico. All proceeds from the thrift store support the
clinic.
On the last Thursday of every month, we make and serve dinner for
the residents of the Torres Homeless Shelter.
The children in our congregation also contribute to tikkun olam! Not only do children participate in
serving our montly dinner at the Torres Shelter, but every year the religious school children engage in a
mitzvah project. This year the children collected supplies for the Butte Humane Society.
